SEATTLE — There are new rules for what you can and cannot bring to Seafair.
The list of prohibited items now includes tents, beach umbrellas and chairs higher than 12 inches off the ground.
Seafair CEO Richard Andersen says the rules are a sign of changing times, and more in line with what other big events now require for safety and security.
Still, he realizes they will catch many Seafair regulars off guard, so he told KIRO 7 that enforcement will be gentle.
"This year we're allowing a lot of things in that we likely won't in future years. But we're trying to send a message that in fairness to everyone, we're trying to keep a safe environment and we're going to begin to start tightening that up," Andersen said.
On Friday, many prohibited items, like hard-sided coolers, were visible in the event area.
At least one group also put up a canopy.
On Friday, the online list of prohibited items included canopies, but the printed signs did not.
