New affordable housing community opens near Tacoma Mall

TACOMA, Wash. — A new affordable housing community opened this week in Tacoma.

It’s called the Viridian Grove Apartments.

It’s on South Mason Avenue, and it is not too far from the Tacoma Mall.

The building has 98 apartments, and people need to earn 60% of the area median income to live there.

For one person --that is a little less than $51,000.

Viridian Grove offers units with two, three, and four bedrooms, intended to serve large and multi-generational families.

Tacoma is focused on building more affordable housing.

“Pierce County is serious about affordable housing, and projects like Viridian Grove prove it,” said Pierce County Executive Ryan Mello. “For every dollar we invest through the Maureen Howard Affordable Housing Fund, our money is multiplied many times over, creating safe, stable, and affordable homes that wouldn’t otherwise get built. We are grateful for partners like Southport, who are proven stewards of our resources and are helping deliver the kind of housing supply Pierce County needs.”

The city aims to build 6,000 new units by 2028.

So far, Tacoma says it has built nearly 2,000 since 2019.
