Last weekend, G. L. Mezzetta Inc., a California-based company, voluntarily recalled its product, Golden Greek Peperoncini Medium Heat, after a customer posted a video on social media showing a dead mouse in a jar.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Mezzetta labeled its recall as “may contain foreign objects such as (a) pest contaminant.”
“We’re aware of a video circulating on social media showing a potential pest contaminant in a jar,” the company said in its Sept. 26 recall notice. “We have contacted the consumer and have moved quickly to investigate the situation and initiate a voluntary recall.”
Mezzetta is “working directly with the [products] to isolate and remove the affected product from sale.”
According to the company, the only affected product was “Mezzetta Golden Greek Peperoncini Medium Heat” in 32-ounce jars, SKU: 10106328, Lot: 720106.
FDA has not yet released a full list of states where this specific product was distributed, but Mezzetta products are sold in several grocery stores and retail outlets in Washington, including Albertsons, Fred Meyer, QFC, Safeway, Target, and Walmart.
“Food safety is our highest priority,” Mezzetta stated. “Our facilities follow established programs for sanitation, pest control, product quality, and traceability designed to protect our products throughout production and distribution.”
