Mechanical issue disrupts some ferry service in Pierce County

Ferry service suspended between Steilacoom, Ketron Island, Anderson Island

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — A mechanical problem has suspended some South Sound ferry service.

The disruption is affecting the ferry connecting Steilacoom in Pierce County with Anderson and Ketron Islands.

It broke down on Saturday, leaving some riders stuck on the islands and others stuck in Steilacoom with no clear timeline for when they can get back home.

Pierce County says the part needed to fix the Steilacoom II ferry isn’t available in the u-s so they have to get it from Canada, adding another hurdle before service can resume.

The service is also not part of the state ferry system.

The county’s second ferry, the Christine Anderson, is currently in dry dock in Everett for Coast Guard inspections until November 6.

That’s leaving riders stranded and scrambling to find another way to get to and from the island.

“It puts a strain on anyone that’s a commuter, cause they can’t get off. My wife is going to work remote on Monday and maybe Tuesday, and they hope if they get the part she’ll be able to commute back in on Wednesday.” Kevin Hellriegel, who lives on Anderson Island.

Ferry service will remain suspended for the entirety of Monday, Oct. 26.

Riders are encouraged to make alternative plans as repair work continues.

“We will continue to provide updates as the repair work proceeds,” the county shared. “We recognize the hardship this disruption causes for island families and residents, and we are working urgently to restore service. Thank you for your patience as our team resolves the mechanical issue. In the event of an emergency, please call 911.”

An update on restoration is expected at 10 a.m. on Monday.
