BURIEN, Wash. — An overnight rampage in downtown Burien left a worker hurt and a store trashed.

King County deputies arrested a man after a two-hour standoff early Tuesday morning at the Golden Smoke House on Southwest 152nd Street.

The man first broke into a fitness studio just below the smoke shop in a strip mall, where Mari Alcazar’s brother and his girlfriend were cleaning at around 1:30 a.m.

“It was a scary situation,” Alcazar said.

The man came at her brother and his girlfriend with a knife, forcing them to throw things at him and take cover behind a counter.

During a struggle, the man stabbed her brother in his hand.

“He just got a couple stitches,” Alcazar said. “It could have been worse.”

The man then used an interior stairway to access the smoke shop upstairs, where deputies said he went on a rampage, breaking things and hurting himself with whatever he could find, including a sword.

“We suspect there was some behavioral health, substance abuse things that contributed to this,” said Sgt. Tim Meyer of the King County Sheriff’s Office.

Crisis negotiators arrived, and deputies arrested the man after a two-hour standoff.
