RENTON, Wash. — An exotic bird loose in the wild is prompting concerns for neighbors in Renton.
For the last few days, a blue and gold macaw has been perched up high on a tree behind a number of homes.
KIRO 7 talked to a neighbor named Rebecca who said that she and her neighbors have been leaving out fruits and nuts to try and lure the bird down to safety.
“We love birds, we don’t want it to be there much longer,” Rebecca said.
Bird rescue volunteers, including Julie Corwin, have also been trying to get the bird down.
Corwin said with more people buying exotic birds as pets, there's an increased chance of them flying loose.
“They can survive. They have plenty of foods like berries and pollens,” said Corwin. “But the biggest threat is other predators, like hawks, eagles and crows.”
Corwin said that this year, the number of calls they are getting about loose birds in Western Washington has tripled, and people need to take more precautions.
“Most birds don’t know how to fly down unless they are trained,” said Corwin.
The macaw has now moved to another tree.
Rebecca said she hopes the bird finds its way home soon.
