2 firefighters injured in large fire at Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo

SEATTLE — A large fire burned Thursday evening at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries, according to officials.

Smoke was pouring from the nocturnal exhibit.  The zoo said it would not be evacuating. No other customers were let in.

Zoo officials said there were some animals in nearby exhibits. They were taken to a safe location for assessment.

Animals from the "Day Exhibit," around 200 reptiles, amphibians and a tree kangaroo were among those safely evacuated. Seattle fire crews will now work to remove tortoises, lizards, amphibians and non-venomous snakes.

"The safety of our animals and guests is our number one priority," Woodland Park Zoo officials said Thursday evening.

Later Thursday night, the zoo announced six small turtles were in a hibernation chamber in the burning building. Their condition is not known at this time.

Officials said two firefighters were injured. Their injuries were minor.

The fire started around 3:15 p.m.
