KITSAP COUNTY, Wash. — The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) has issued a public warning regarding phone scams involving callers who impersonate law enforcement officers.
Authorities warn that scammers are using high-pressure tactics and threats of arrest to steal money and personal information.
KCSO says fraudulent callers are using increasingly sophisticated methods to sound legitimate. Scammers often manipulate caller ID displays to mirror official agency phone numbers and may use the names of actual law enforcement employees to deceive victims.
The sheriff’s office identified several red flags associated with phone scams, noting that callers often claim a resident has an active warrant or faces immediate arrest if they do not comply. Callers frequently pressure victims to act quickly, discouraging them from hanging up, asking questions, or consulting others.
Scammers often demand immediate payment for fines or bail using specific payment methods, including gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or payment apps. The sheriff’s office says that legitimate agencies do not demand payments through these methods.
Another common tactic they say involves callers claiming a victim’s family member is in jail and urgently needs money for bail or release. Fraudsters may also attempt to solicit sensitive personal data, including Social Security numbers, bank account details, passwords, and verification codes.
To avoid falling victim to phone fraud, the sheriff’s office advises residents to hang up immediately if a call feels suspicious. Officials recommend verifying any claims independently by contacting law enforcement agencies or detention facilities directly using official phone numbers looked up by the resident and reporting suspected scams to local authorities.
