SEATTLE — A 14-year-old suspect was arrested in connection with a 17-year-old who was shot Thursday evening in south Seattle, police said.

The shooting happened in the 3900 block of South Graham Street.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a 17-year-old boy in the street with multiple gunshot wounds, officials said.

Medics with the Seattle Fire Department took the victim to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.

According to witnesses and evidence collected from the scene, police believe the victim was sitting on the steps at Aki Kurose Middle School when he was approached by the 14-year-old boy. Both exchanged gunfire.

The 14-year-old then fled on foot, but police found him hiding in a nearby yard, law enforcement said. They also found a gun that the suspect had allegedly thrown in some bushes when he fled.

Police said the suspect will be booked into the juvenile detention center for first-degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The shooting remains under investigation.
