1 in custody after standoff on I-5 in Chehalis

CHEHALIS, Wash. — Interstate 5 near Chehalis has reopened four hours after the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) shut it down in both directions due to a police standoff.

The activity was reported around 6:30 p.m. on southbound I-5 near Rush Road.

According to Washington State Patrol (WSP), the person led troopers on a chase, running from units from Mason and Thurston Counties.

Troopers put out stop spikes on Rush Road. It appears the car hit them and came to a stop on the interstate, blocking two lanes of southbound traffic.

The person then barricaded themselves inside their car.

WSP and WSDOT also blocked the northbound lanes as a safety precaution.

WSP said the driver was the only person in the vehicle.

I-5 was shut down for four hours. WSP announced at 10:30 p.m. that a person was taken into custody.
