SEATTLE — The 118th edition of the Apple Cup brought Washington and Washington State together for the earliest meeting in the rivalry’s history.
Normally played around Thanksgiving, this year’s game was moved to the opening week of the season as college sports continue to navigate a changing landscape.
“It’s the state’s biggest rivalry,” one fan said.
On the field, both teams took time to get going as they worked through what appeared to be early-season rust.
Washington scored its first touchdown of the season on a scramble by quarterback Demond Williams. The play was reviewed before the touchdown was confirmed, delaying the celebration for home fans.
The Huskies had been favored to win by three touchdowns; however, the game remained tight for much of the afternoon, with Washington fans waiting until late in the fourth quarter to fully celebrate the victory.
Penalties contributed to what was at times a rough contest, but UW found reasons to cheer as the game unfolded. The Huskies produced bigger plays throughout the afternoon while holding Washington State in check for much of the day.
The matchup also offered a different look than many Apple Cups in recent memory. Instead of the cold and often wet conditions associated with late-November rivalry games, fans were treated to sunny September weather.
Washington State supporters also traveled well for the game.
“This is the earliest Apple Cup ever, but we are still here; we are all over the state,” one Cougars fan told KIRO 7.
The setting helped create a unique atmosphere at Husky Stadium, often considered one of college football’s premier venues.
For Washington fans, the day also marked the return of quarterback Demond Williams following a tumultuous offseason. Williams delivered a strong performance, throwing for a touchdown and running for another while helping keep the Cougars at bay throughout the game.
The win gives UW a successful start to the season. The Huskies return home next Saturday to host Utah State.
Washington State will look for its first win of the season next Saturday when the Cougars travel to face Kansas State.
