Seattle police are investigating a death after human remains were found at a city park.
The skeletal remains were found in Seattle's Interlaken Park north of Capitol Hill by a passerby Sunday afternoon.
Seattle police say the remains were on the eastern edge of the wooded area between Capitol Hill and the Montlake neighborhood.
Det. Patrick Michaud said the death did not appear to be suspicious. The body was turned over to the King County Medical Examiner.
Neighbors say homeless camps have sprouted up in the area and there have been car prowls and break-ins in the neighborhood, which have already made them feel unsafe.
Neighbor Amy Vorenkamp said it was even more unsettling to see Seattle police cars and the King County Medical Examiner spend hours right across the street from their homes.
“We don't use the trails anymore. We used to be able to run through the trails. I think part of the trail system is open, but I have a dog and I don't necessarily feel comfortable running with him down there anymore,” Vorenkamp says.
Vorenkamp says the park has attracted trouble for her family and her car has been broken into twice.
“I'm irritated, I don't feel safe. And I feel something needs to be done,” Vorenkamp says.
Seattle police say the death is under investigation.
The manner of death and identification will be made by the medical examiner.
