SEATTLE — A man who lives in a home that caught fire in West Seattle early Wednesday said his mother was unable to escape the flames.
Fire officials later confirmed that one person died in the fire.
The fire at the home on 44th Avenue Southwest near Southwest 100th Street was called in at about 4:38 a.m. Wednesday.
Fire officials say when they arrived at the house, it was fully involved in flames and lines were down in the area.
A man who lives in the home with his mother told KIRO 7 that he and a friend were outside working in a shed when the fire broke out. He said his mother was inside a bathroom when the fire broke out and he could hear her banging on the windows trying to escape, but the flames were too intense to get her out.
Fire crews tried to search for the woman, but the flames became too intense and they had to take a defensive stance and fight the fire from the outside.
Shortly before 6 a.m., the flames were under control.
Firefighters later entered the home and found a body inside.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
