On Thursday, the Food and Drug Administration recalled a thyroid medication made by Vitruvias Therapeutics after testing revealed the product could be superpotent.
The affected medication is Thyroid Tablets, dosed at USP 30 mg, from lot No. 504950.
Consuming these superpotent tablets could cause an overactive thyroid, which can lead to weight loss, heat intolerance, fatigue, nervousness, muscle weakness, hypertension, chest pain, rapid heart rate, or heart rhythm disturbances.
According to the FDA, the patient population at greater risk from superpotent thyroid hormone is elderly patients, pregnant women, and infants, especially over extended periods of time. Excess levels of thyroid hormones in the elderly have been associated with adverse outcomes, particularly to cardiac health.
The FDA said in its recall notice that it is not aware of any instances of harm related to consumption of the tablets in the lot.
