CHEHALIS, Wash. — The stepmother of a boy who was hit and killed by a car in Chehalis wants answers as to how it happened.

Police said the boy was lying in the road when he was hit by an unsuspecting driver on Highway 6 at 2:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Tyler Gonzalez, 16, is described by friends and family as a very funny and good-hearted person, and for them, the bizarre circumstances of his death make no sense.

“It’s very heartbreaking. I just want to know what happened to him,” said Gonzalez’s stepmother, Vickie Gregory.

Gonzalez’s friends and family said he had been at a party in the area. They heard he was drinking alcohol and may have been left by his other friends and was then told to leave the party.

But they said don't understand how he ended up lying in the road.

“Tyler is not that stupid to say, ‘I don’t want to walk anymore’ or ‘I’m tired, I’m going to lie in the middle of the road,’” said Gregory.

Gregory said she won't rest until the State Patrol can tell her exactly what happened at the party where Tyler got the alcohol and how he ended up dead.

“If there is somebody at fault, if there is foul play, I just want there to be charges pressed and I want it to be dealt with soon,” said Gregory.

The State Patrol is the lead agency in the case.

Investigators are still working to determine what happened to the teenager in the hours leading up to his death.
