The family of a Federal Way High School teen, who died after a workout on campus, is suing the school district.

Last summer, 16-year-old Allen Harris collapsed and died suddenly after a conditioning workout at the school.

According to the medical examiner, Allen Harris, 16, had a heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

In the wrongful death lawsuit filed in King County, lawyers argue the coaches at the Federal Way school did not have proper training to treat sudden cardiac arrest, even though regular training is mandated under Washington state law.

According to the American Heart Association, it is rare, but some people with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can have sudden cardiac arrest during very vigorous physical activity.
