WASHINGTON — Most of this week’s lane and ramp closures are a continuation of the region’s pavement repair projects scheduled to wrap up in the spring of 2027.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is also continuing landscape work, pedestrian upgrades, and demolition of the old Montlake Boulevard exit ramp from eastbound SR 520.
These projects will bring multiple lane closures, ramp closures, and full closures that could impede your commute. WSDOT has taken this into consideration, scheduling most of this work late-night into the early morning hours.
Multiple lane and ramp closures on I-5, I-405
Pavement repairs are planned overnight between the Eastside and Seattle this week, beginning Monday night on I-405 between Bellevue and Kirkland.
The following closures are planned from as early as 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next day unless noted.
Tuesday night, Sept. 15, between Shoreline and Seattle:
- Up to three right lanes of northbound I-5 between Northeast Ravenna Boulevard and Northeast 92nd Street.
- Up to three right lanes of southbound I-5 between Northeast 185th and 130th Streets.
- Northbound I-5 off-ramp to Northeast 85th Street.
- Northeast 70th Street on-ramp to northbound I-5.
- Northeast 145th Street on-ramp to southbound I-5.
Wednesday night, Sept. 16, between Seattle and Shoreline:
- Up to four right lanes of southbound I-5 between Northeast 185th and 50th streets will close intermittently throughout the night.
- Up to three lanes of northbound I-5 between Northeast 85th and 155th streets will close intermittently throughout the night.
- Northeast 130th Street on-ramp to southbound I-5.
- Northeast 85th Street on-ramp to southbound I-5.
- Fifth Avenue Northeast on-ramp to northbound I-5.
- Northbound I-5 off-ramp to King County Metro North Bus Base.
Thursday night, Sept. 17, between Shoreline and Seattle:
- Three left lanes of northbound I-5 between Northeast Ravenna Boulevard and Northeast 92nd Street will close intermittently throughout the night.
- Up to four lanes of southbound I-5 between Northeast 175th Street and Northeast Northgate Way will close intermittently throughout the night.
- Banner Way Northeast on-ramp to northbound I-5.
People traveling through these areas should expect delays and follow signed detours around ramp closures. Signed detours will guide people around ramp closures each night.
Multiple lane and ramp closures on I-5 in Kent
WSDOT will conduct drainage work along I-5 between Kent and Federal Way overnight through Friday. Crews will also perform landscape work along the South 188th Street on-ramp to State Route 509 (SR 509).
This work is part of the SR 509 Completion Project.
There will be I-5 lane closures between Kent and Federal Way from Monday, Sept. 14, to the morning of Friday, Sept. 18, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Up to two lanes of southbound I-5 will close nightly from SR 516 (Exit 149) to South 272nd Street (Exit 147).
The SR 509 ramp in Kent will be closed from Wednesday, Sept. 16 to the morning of Friday, Sept. 18, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The South 188th Street on-ramp to northbound SR 509 will close nightly. A signed detour will be in place.
Lane and ramp closures on the Valley Freeway/SR 167
Pavement repairs are scheduled overnight between Kent and Renton.
The following closures are planned from 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. on three nights this week:
Tuesday night, Sept. 15:
- Two right lanes of northbound SR 167 from West James Street to 84th Avenue South.
- The northbound SR 167 off-ramp to 84th Avenue South.
Thursday night, Sept. 17:
- Two right lanes of northbound SR 167 from South 192nd Street to South 180th Street/Southwest 43rd Avenue.
Monday through Friday, utility crews will be working overnight on the on/off-ramps at Ellingson Road, closing access from SR 167.
The ramps in both directions of SR 167 will close at Ellingson Road nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Drivers on Ellingson Road will alternate traffic near the work zone.
Alternating traffic on SR 525
The regional pavement project brings lane closures through a number of intersections overnight this week on SR 525 between Paine Field and the Mukilteo Ferry Terminal.
Nightly, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, to Friday morning, Sept. 18, northbound SR 525 will alternate traffic through the intersections between Paine Field and the Mukilteo Ferry Terminal (mileposts 5 to 8).
Contractor crews will repave the roadway, construct Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant sidewalks, and make bicycle safety improvements on SR 525 from just north of Paine Field Boulevard to the Mukilteo Ferry Terminal.
Drivers heading to the Mukilteo Ferry Terminal need to plan accordingly and expect delays. Pedestrians may encounter detours using city streets.
Big changes coming to SR 302 in Gig Harbor
From 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, and Thursday, Sept. 17, WSDOT will begin working to permanently close the right lane of southbound SR 302, along a 1-mile stretch between the Purdy Bay Bridge and Burnham Drive Northwest.
When the work is complete, southbound SR 302 will be reduced to one lane between the Purdy Bay Bridge and Burnham Drive. This is designed to improve safety by reducing opportunities for risky driver behavior, including speeding and last-minute merging near the SR 16 interchange.
Other safety improvements include a new shared use path for walkers and rollers along southbound SR 302 in the shoulder area, and a left turn restriction from Burnham Drive to SR 302.
Since this project is during daylight hours, drivers can expect heavy backups at times.
Montlake Boulevard exit ramp closed
WSDOT crews initially closed the Montlake Boulevard off-ramp from eastbound SR 520 on Saturday, Sept. 12, and will remain closed through Saturday, Sept. 19 at 8 a.m.
Crews are demolishing portions of the old off-ramp, which was closed in June. Crews are using the new off-ramp as a work zone.
Drivers who get on SR 520 from I-5 will not have an exit ramp before crossing the lake bridge and will have to pay the toll. Drivers can still access Montlake Boulevard from westbound SR 520.
