Enrollment underway for programs designed to help parents save for college

Enrollment for Washington's 529 college savings plans are now open until May.

The 529 savings program allows parents to put aside money towards college tuition and 100,000 families have opened accounts so far.

The savings program come as student debt has hit $1.6 trillion nationwide.

KIRO 7's Ranji Sinha speaks with Minor about the different options families in Washington state have in the video player above.

The average 2018 college graduate owes more than $23,000 in debts, according to program director Luke Minor.
