BREMERTON, Wash. — Bremerton police said Thursday the area of Pacific Avenue South to the ferry terminal entrance was shut down for a possible explosive device.
Police said a person placed what appeared to be an explosive device inside the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard gate around 11:45 a.m. The public was asked to stay away from the area.
Officials with Kitsap Transit said foot ferry and fast ferry sailings from Bremerton were suspended while law enforcement officials investigated the threat.
At 2 p.m., the Seattle, Bremerton ferry route was out of service because of the investigation and response. Officials were still examining the item around 3 p.m.
The Bremerton foot ferry dock was closed and officials said buses were staging at 5th Street and Washington Avenue instead of the Bremerton Transportation Center.
Navy explosive technicians were able to determine the package was not an explosive threat.
The Seattle, Bremerton ferry route resumed service with 4:15 p.m. departures after the temporary terminal closure.
