Bothell police warn about mail theft, urge people to double check mailed checks

BOTHELL, Wash. — Bothell police are urging people to be vigilant and monitor how they send checks, as they deal with stolen mail cases.

The Bothell Police Department took to Facebook earlier today, Aug. 17, to remind anyone sending checks through the mail that a check can clear with the intended amount, but to a completely different person.

In order to prevent altered check issues, Bothell police recommend reviewing cleared checks (if your bank allows you to), setting up and monitoring bank alerts, utilizing other methods of payment, and communicating with the individual who you sent the money to and double checking they received the check.

“The sooner an altered check is identified, the sooner you can take action,” the post reads.

They also add that if you discover something wrong with your check, you should notify your bank and police.
