Amazon first streaming service to get best picture nomination with ‘Manchester by the Sea'

Actor Casey Affleck, winner of Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for 'Manchester by the Sea,' poses in the press room during the 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 8, 2017 in Beverly Hills, California.

Not only has Amazon Studios received its first Oscar nomination, it has also become the first streaming service to grab a nomination for best picture.

On Tuesday morning, Manchester by the Sea received a total of six Academy Awards nominations, including directing, original screenplay, lead actor, supporting actor and supporting actress.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Amazon also has a seventh nomination – this time in the foreign language film category – with Iran's The Salesman.

Manchester also won at the Golden Globes with Casey Affleck scoring best actor in a motion picture - drama.

The Hollywood Reporter says though Netflix was the first streaming service to begin buying and producing original films, and earned its first Oscar nomination in 2014 for The Square, since then, all of its Oscar nominations have been in the documentary category.

Though both Amazon and Netflix are spending plenty for possibly award-winning films, Amazon has been willing to give movies a full run in theaters before offering them to its Prime members, which may give them an upper hand with filmmakers.
