84-year-old in-home caregiver sentenced for raping client

PORT ANGELES, Wash. — An 84-year-old in-home caregiver was sentenced Thursday in Clallam County Superior Court to 12 months in custody for assaulting a vulnerable adult in his care.

The Port Angeles Police Department (PAPD) says Donald Breazeale was sentenced after pleading guilty to third-degree rape and second-degree assault as part of a plea deal.

Police began an investigation after the victim reported being sexually assaulted by Breazeale, who was employed as the victim’s caregiver.

Following the report, the victim was examined at a hospital, where medical personnel collected a sexual assault evidence kit. Investigators subsequently matched DNA evidence recovered from the kit directly to Breazeale.

Along with his 12-month sentence, Breazeale was ordered to serve three years of community custody. The court also required him to surrender all caretaker credentials, complete a sex offender treatment program, and register as a sex offender for life.
