3 Mason County schools closed for threats

BELFAIR, Wash. — Officials with the North Mason School District say a middle school and two high schools in Belfair are closed Tuesday after threats were received.

The district said the Mason County Sheriff’s Office recommended that Hawkins Middle School, James A. Taylor High School and North Mason High School be closed to students while deputies investigate threats of violence.

The sheriff’s office said the threats found on social media were related to a planned walkout on Tuesday. Police are still investigating whether the threats are credible.

The sheriff’s office said the threat is specific to the upper campus only and not the elementary schools. Belfair and Sand Hill elementary schools will be open as usual.

No before or after school activities will be held.

Sheriff’s officials eventually determined there was no credible threat.

The schools will be open as usual Wednesday.
