16-year-old creates youth-led initiative around bike, e-bike safety

SEATTLE, Wash. — A 16-year-old student is working to make bike, e-bike, and e-moto safety information and resources easier for riders, parents, and communities to access.

Divisha Arora, founder of Know Your Ride, says safety needs to begin before someone gets on a bike — not only after an accident happens.

“I understand how freeing it is to ride a bike. I understand that kids get a sense of independence,” Arora said. “But, at the same time, it’s important for them to actually understand these rules.”

Arora created an entire website dedicated to bike, e-bike, and e-moto safety. The site includes frameworks and guides for parents, students, neighbors, and communities, along with information designed to help people identify what type of bike they have.

“A lot of the times, information is very scattered. It can be across multiple sources, making it really hard for families to even understand what the questions that they’re asking are,” Arora said. “But what Know Your Ride aims to do is bring all this information in one place so that people can have clearer access to safety.”

The idea grew in part from an incident in Arora’s neighborhood. She said someone she considers like an uncle was backing out of his driveway when a young rider came toward him at full speed on an e-bike.

Thankfully, no one was seriously injured, but Arora said the experience left both people shocked. She said she also created this after seeing a pattern of recent events involving e-bikes.

“After seeing that and after going like, alright, people need this information so that they can actually ride their e-bikes more safely,” Arora said.

Arora is also taking her message into the community, speaking at city council meetings, and attending events and farmers markets to raise awareness about e-bike safety.

With crashes and emergency room visits becoming a growing concern, Arora says her goal is straightforward — make safety information accessible and help prevent accidents.

“Through Know Your Ride, what I aim to do is give access to the safety information to people,” Arora said. “So that maybe it can help us towards saving one life every day.”

For Arora, the message is simple: understanding how to ride safely should be part of the experience from the very beginning.
