LA CONNER, Wash. — Two women were airlifted to a hospital after they were hurt in a house fire near La Conner early Wednesday.
A 7-year-old boy was able to escape the home unharmed.
Firefighters were called to the home in the 12400 block of Downey Road in Skagit County for a report of a house fire with someone trapped inside at about 3:30 a.m.
Skagit County deputies and Swinomish police officers who arrived at the home before firefighters were told that a 70-year-old woman got out of the burning house but then went back inside to rescue a cat and she had not come back out.
Officers and deputies located the woman, but had to come back out of the house to get air because of heavy smoke.
They then went back inside and were able to drag the 70-year-old out. They performed CPR on the woman until medics arrived.
A 50-year-old woman and a boy also escaped the fire. The boy was not hurt, but the woman was burned.
The two women were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with smoke inhalation and burns. They are both in intensive care.
Two deputies were treated for smoke inhalation.
The fire has since been put out. The cause is under investigation.
