SNOHOMISH COUNTY, Wash. — A suspected DUI driver accused of striking and killing two pedestrians on State Route 9 in Arlington early Thursday made his first court appearance Friday.

A judge set his bail at $500,000.

Police said the 28-year-old Stanwood resident struck a man and a woman as they walked across the intersection of the highway and 204th Street Northeast.

The victims, identified as 39-year-old Tausha M. Schmidt and 39-year-old Justin C. Wilkerson, died due to blunt force injuries, the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed. They both lived in Arlington.

The suspect remained at the scene after the fatal collision, and was arrested and booked into jail for investigation of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence.

KIRO 7 obtained surveillance video showing the moments before the crash.

In the video, the victims can be seen buying cigarettes at a nearby convenience store.

The investigation remains ongoing.
