KENT, Wash. — A Kent-Meridian High School senior died after a “car-surfing” incident in the school’s parking lot Tuesday, police said.

Police said Lupo Benson was riding on the hood of a vehicle just as school let out Tuesday when the vehicle made a sharp turn, throwing him off.

Police did not say how fast the driver was going.

Benson sustained life-threatening injuries and died Wednesday.

“This incident is a reminder to teens that this is a dangerous game and the risks can prove to be tragic,” said Kent police Detective Melanie Robinson.

KIRO 7 talked to Benson's football teammates Wednesday night.

"I didn't think it was, like, life-threatening or anything, you know. I thought he was going to be back after a little while," said Marquise Card-Diallo.

"I never thought one of my brothers from the football team would pass away that quick and he almost graduated. He was two months away from graduating," said Jovan McConico.

Kent School District officials said counselors will be on campus for students.

Police said the King County Prosecutor’s Office has requested to review the investigation upon completion to determine whether or not charges will be filed against the driver.
