No smoking: Third WSU campus goes tobacco-free

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University students will no longer smoke on the soon-to-be-tobacco-free campus starting in the fall of 2016.

WSU's Board of Regents voted on Friday to prohibit nicotine from public places and workplaces at the school. Previously, smokers could light up as long as they stood 25 feet from entrances, exits and windows.

“Despite some objections, students, faculty and staff, when given the opportunity to give feedback, all expressed overwhelming support for this policy,” said student regent Jansen VanderMeulen.

WSU joins more than 1,500 other smoke-free campuses in the United States. Spokane and Vancouver campuses became smoke-free more than two years ago.
