Father of Marysville-Pilchuck school shooter to be released from federal custody

SEATTLE — The father of a Marysville high school student who killed four classmates and himself last fall has been ordered by a federal judge to be released from federal custody under a variety of conditions.

Raymond Lee Fryberg Jr. was arrested Tuesday, charged with illegally obtaining a Beretta handgun despite a protection order against him.  During his Tuesday court appearance, prosecutors asked that he be kept in custody.

His son, Jaylen Fryberg, shot and fatally wounded four friends and seriously wounded another last October in the cafeteria at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.  The gun he used was his father’s Beretta.

Raymond Fryberg was ordered released during a detention hearing Thursday under several conditions.  The federal magistrate was adamant that Fryberg be prohibited from possessing ammunition, firearms, or other dangerous items.

His travel must be restricted to the western district of Washington, and he must surrender his concealed weapons license before being released. Authorities also must confirm there are no weapons in his home before he is released.

Fryberg will wait in the Federal Detention Center in SeaTac until he is released.

He is also subject to a reasonable search of his house any time during this pre-trial period.
