Family in disbelief after woman is run over, killed while walking home

BREMERTON, Wash. — We now know the young woman hit and killed by a man police say was possibly driving drunk is 23-year-old Alana Kemppainen. The incident happened overnight Wednesday on Tracyton Boulveard near Bremerton. A 25-year-old man, who family says was a friend of Kemppainen’s was struck as well and is in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center.

Law enforcement sources tell us the driver was 26-year-old Daniel Krogman; he's in the Kitsap County Jail facing vehicular homicide and vehicular assault charges.

Wednesday afternoon on the side of Tracyton Boulevard, where a memorial is beginning to form, Kemppainena’s godmother told us that she and a friend made the right choice and were punished for it.

We scoured social media for information on the man police say was driving. Krogman’s friends flooded his Facebook page with support, demanding people stop talking about what happened; one claimed he was a passenger in the car.

Krogman's last post hours before the crash asks friends to come to a local Tracyton bar for his going away party.

People who loved Kemppainen didn't know where she had been last night, if she attended that party, or if she knew Krogman.

"We're just gathering together now,” her cousin Jessica Fisher said after putting flowers near the spot where Kemppainen was killed.

Friends and family are still trying to come to terms with how something so tragic could happen to someone who had been so careful.

“She’s so bright and beautiful,” Tricia said. “You think this is a safe area, it's Tracyton-- nothing happens in Tracyton."

We reached out to Krogman's friends on Facebook but they didn’t reply.

Krogman will be arraigned in Kitsap County Court at 3 p.m. Thursday.
