SEATTLE — Some parents in Seattle are continuing their fight against a proposed “mega-school” in Ballard.
Neighbors just appealed a decision to expand Loyal heights Elementary School.
The city wants to give the school a $37 million makeover.
That would expand the current campus by 54,000 feet to make room for 660 students.
The latest appeal focuses on the design of an internal courtyard that could be used as a play place for kids.
But it's part of a broader effort to keep the school from changing the neighborhood.
“I think that we have a pretty good understanding of the problem and that that’s all we’ve ever wanted – a means to make it work for everyone. In a way that doesn’t alienate the neighbors and the community,” said Ballard resident Maryann Firpo.
Neighbors say the school would largely wipe out a neighborhood playground that neighbors raised half a million dollars to build 15 years ago.
