SEATTLE — Police are investigating after a car crashed into a building and caused a gas leak in the Rainier Valley Thursday night.
The incident happened at Rainier Avenue South and South Genesee Street.
The smell of natural gas permeated the air for blocks around from 9:30 p.m., when the crash happened, until about 10:45 p.m. when the leak was closed off.
No known injuries have been reported.
Earlie Spruell was in his basement vacuuming when he heard loud repeated gunfire moving south along Rainier Avenue near Genesee.
“It was loud, like a machine gun,” Spruell said.
He came outside and saw that a sedan had slammed into a restaurant near his home following the gunfire. Then Spruell smelled the gas leak.
The Seattle police gang unit was on the scene, but did appear to be frantically looking for anyone. No one was in the car that crashed by the time KIRO 7 arrived .
Police said they are working to confirm that the shots and the crash area related.
