Fire burns 3 Maple Leaf homes, melts part of school

SEATTLE — A fire that burned three homes in Seattle's Maple Leaf neighborhood reportedly started in a house under construction.

Neighbors told KIRO 7 they heard people yelling in nearby homes around 3 a.m. telling people to get out.

"It slowly, slowly started spreading, and it was just really scary to see houses start to spread," a neighbor said. "And wow, [we started asking] 'When are they going to get here, when are they going to get here?'"

Everyone was able to make it to safety.

The fire was so strong, a Catholic school across the street had their windows blown out and parts of their metal front were melted down.

Firefighters said the close proximity of the homes is what caused this to spread so fast. The fire nearly reached more homes before it was contained.
