Olympia — It only took one minute.

That's how much time went by between when an Amber Alert message appeared on 15-year-old Camryn Wood's phone and her call to 911 saying she and her dad were following the suspect's car.

That led to the arrest of Cassandra Wilhelm on assault and kidnapping charges after police say she assaulted her estranged husband in Lacey and kidnapped their 18-month-old son, Mason.

Authorities said Wilhelm is a schizophrenic who is addicted to pills and heroin.

They also said she put her child in the car without a car seat, carrying him on her lap.

Wood and her dad were in Lacey when they spotted the vehicle ahead.

"We just followed them," Wood said. "They jumped on the freeway, they were making all sorts of turns. We were trying to not make it obvious that we were behind them."

Wood said Wilhelm was clearly trying to lose them as they called 911, but they kept following her.

Police rescued Mason in a hotel parking lot.

He was unhurt and has been returned to his father.

"Actually seeing you can make a difference and help somebody get their kid, that means the world to me," Wood said.
