ALASKA — An Alaska man mauled by a brown bear last week thought he was dead meat -- until the bear suddenly let him go.

“I remember thinking, ‘this thing is going to kill me,’” Kenneth Steck said.

Kenneth and his wife, Hannah, were on a camping trip with family, KTVA's Shannon Ballard reports.

Steck’s head was in the bear’s mouth. The bear also shattered Steck’s scapula and ripped a 4 inch gash in his leg before letting him go.

"I was facing the bear the whole time," Steck said. "…I remember the sound of it breathing, I remember the sound of it snarling."
