TROUTDALE, Ore. — Quick Facts:

  • Victim identified as Emilio Hoffman, 14 year old freshman
  • Shooter dead but still not identified
  • Teacher grazed by bullet; instituted lockdown
  • Shooting in boys locker room on second-to-last day of school year

Authorities in Troutdale late Tuesday confirmed Emilio Hoffman, 14, a high school freshman, was killed in a morning rampage at Reynolds High School, Oregon's second-largest shooting.

As students gathered on the second-to-last day of the school year, two shots were heard in a detached building that houses the school gym at about 8 a.m.

"We just heard two gunshots. And everybody was freaking out, and we just all ran into the weight room hallway, and just hid and locked all the doors," said student Tate Blaylock.

Police say Hoffman was killed in the boys' locker room.

Physical education teacher Todd Rispler was grazed in the hip by a bullet while teaching a weight lifting class.

Police said Rispler was able to make his way to the school office to alert colleagues to the shooting and begin a campus lockdown.

The teenage gunman used a rifle and was later found dead in a different bathroom in the same building, having apparently killed himself.

Police said they had not confirmed his identity so they were not releasing his name or confirming if he was a student at the school.

Chief Scott Anderson of Troutdale's police department said he met with Hoffman's parents.

"I can tell you how devastated they are," Anderson said. "They want you to know that Emillio was a great kid and he was loved by all."

As the shooting began, students began frantically texting their parents, who rushed to a gathering point near the school.

Students and parents were later reunited.
