EVERETT, Wash. — A major road in Everett is closed while work is underway to install a new bridge that will stop severe flooding during intense rain.

West Marine View Drive Road is closed between 13th and 18th streets, where the 1-million pound Grand Avenue Park Bridge was constructed and now staged. The road closure that started Tuesday will last 10 days.

Massive towers will be built to lift the structure before turning it and putting it into place over Marine View Drive.

During the closure, drivers will use detour routes to access north and south port destinations.

Pipes will run underneath to help move water off the streets above, replacing deteriorated underground pipelines on landslide-prone slopes. Stormwater will be channeled into Possession Sound.

The bridge will also allow pedestrians to cross from Grand Avenue Park to the waterfront.

Construction began in 2017 after a series of flooding problems.  Currently, the road can't handle heavy rain such as was seen during storms last week.

The bridge is set to open in 2020.
