SEATTLE — Driver's-license applications in Washington state will no longer ask where a person was born.
A 120-day emergency rule with the change has taken effect while officials seek a permanent modification to state law.
The rule is intended to immediately end the collection of information not required by state or federal statute, officials said; it went into effect Friday.
Washington state licensing officials said earlier this month the department has regularly been providing photos and driver's license applications upon request to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
"DOL is taking these actions to ensure the agency is safeguarding personal information that can be used to determine immigration status and to uphold the intent of Governor Inslee's Executive Order 17-01, Reaffirming Washington's Commitment to Tolerance, Diversity and Inclusiveness," the release said.
