Wrong-way driver arrested in fatal Thurston County crash

THURSTON COUNTY, Wash. — A man was arrested after troopers say he drove the wrong way on US 101 in Thurston County, causing a fatal crash.

It happened in the southbound lanes at 5:09 a.m. Friday at Shaker Church Road northwest of Olympia. A man driving a Nissan pickup in the wrong direction collided with another vehicle.

One person died at the scene. Their name has not been released.

The southbound lanes were closed at Shaker Church Road while troopers investigated, but the crash has since been cleared.

The wrong-way driver, a 53-year-old Gig Harbor man, was arrested for investigation of vehicular homicide. Troopers said drugs are suspected to be a factor in the crash.
