An early morning theft last week left a Wenatchee-area high school’s flag pole bare and without a flag made for a senior student’s Eagle Scout project, according to the school district.
Wenatchee School District 246 posted surveillance video to their Facebook Thursday showing what they said was a prowler outside Wenatchee High School stealing the school's flags.
The video shows the suspected prowler climbing atop a trash can at about 4 a.m. Saturday to remove the school’s United States flag and Wenatchee High School pride flag from its pole.
The pride flag was donated by WHS Senior Jonathan Higgins, the school district says. The flag was part of his Eagle Scout project.
Higgins designed the flags himself, raising money to have them made by a professional flag maker.
He presented the flag to his school on his 18th birthday.
“Jonathan says that the flag is meant ‘as a symbol of who we are as a school’ and that it ‘embodies our desire to learn’,” Tom Couey, a school security officer, said in a statement on Facebook.
The prowler appears to be a white man in his 20’s. In the video he is seen wearing a dark stocking cap, a light colored plaid coat, a dark hoodie, dark pants and skater shoes.
The Wenatchee School District flies the U.S flag outside all of its schools and inside every classroom.
“Together, the U.S. flag and our school flag are important reminders of who we are as a nation, a community and a school and foster in us a sense of history, pride and accomplishment,” Couey’s statement said.
The investigation has been turned over to the Wenatchee Police. Anyone with information is asked to call 509-663-9911.
