OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Olympia School District might push back middle and high school start times by at least an hour.
Currently, high school classes start at 7:45 a.m. The district is considering changing the start time to 8:50 a.m.
For middle schools, start times would be pushed back from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.
A study from the University of Washington found later start times leads to more sleep and better academic performance.
A survey done by the Olympia School District earlier this year found strong support for later start times.
The school district is continuing to conduct a survey on the issue.
If approved by the school board, the new start times would take effect the next school year in 2020.
