FIFE, Wash. — Some commuters say new ramp meters in the South Sound are causing significant delays.
The I-5 onramps in Tacoma and Fife had metered signals installed that were turned on Monday.
Some drivers told KIRO 7 their wait times were up to 20 minutes when the meters are operating during the morning commute.
The Washington State Department of Transportation said the signals space out the number of cars entering the freeway, making for better transitions on the highway and easing congestion.
The northbound I-5 meters are at 28th near the Emerald Queen Casino, 54th in Fife and the Port of Tacoma Road.
But some drivers are complaining of being stuck for long periods of time and said there’s mile-long backups.
