Plane sinks after landing on Lake Whatcom

WHATCOM COUNTY, Washington — A sea plane sank after landing on Lake Whatcom on Friday afternoon, just hours after another small plane landed on Interstate 5 in Bellingham after it experienced engine trouble.

"This can't be x2 in 1 day," Bellingham Fire Chief Bill Boyd tweeted. But it was.

According to officials, two Anacortes men were inside the plane.

“They nose-dived, and the plane submarined into the water and it flooded,” said one of the teens, Justin Pennell, who helped the two men.

Four high school students on a small boat heard the men yelling, and helped tow their plane to the beach.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane in the latter mishap was a SeaRey.
