GIG HARBOR, Wash. — Police are patrolling several schools in Pierce and Kitsap counties because of rumors of violence.
The biggest response was going to occur in Kitsap County Friday. Off-duty officers were put on shift to patrol the schools, but north and central Kitsap schools are now closed because of icy conditions.
At Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor, where there have been rumors of violence, a Pierce County deputy has been seen driving through the parking lot several times.
According to an email sent to parents, there were a number of rumors going around about a threat to students at Peninsula High and Harbor Ridge.
The school district said it wants parents at Peninsula and Harbor Ridge Middle School to know that despite rumors of threats, students are safe and classes will go on as scheduled.
The district determined the rumors started when a high school student made a comment to his younger sibling that was perceived as a threat to students and the sibling then reported it to the school.
After investigating, administrators determined it wasn't a serious threat, but they've increased patrols at both schools to reassure parents and students.
There have been rumors and threats in Western Washington and across the country this week.
Many think the threats are copycat-type hoaxes following last week's school shooting in Connecticut.
