EVERETT, Wash. — The Everett City Council just approved plans to build a new homeless housing in one residential community.
The unanimous 6-0 vote for the project happened Wednesday. The building is set to be built in an area near the intersection of Bershire Drive and Evergreen Way.
But according to the Everett Herald, many people in the community aren't happy about the idea of homeless people moving in.
Their concerns range from an increase in crime to a drop in their property values.
They even submitted 150 signatures to the city council opposing the project.
But for now, the city is pushing ahead with the plan to build a 70-unit apartment house that would be run by Catholic Housing Services.
According to the city, they picked the location because it's a convenient spot close to public transit.
The goal is to get the homeless to be self-sufficient while living in the housing and eventually find their own place to live.
