Marysville Police Department to hire customer service officers to help improve response times

MARYSVILLE, Wash. — The Marysville City Council authorized the Marysville Police Department to hire three new customer service officers, who will help handle “less serious” calls, during its meeting on Monday.

These non-commissioned officers will assist with calls related to non-injury and non-blocking traffic incidents, abandoned vehicles, parking issues and other misdemeanor-related offenses that do not have suspect information.

In a news release, the council said the customer service officers would allow commissioned officers to respond to more serious emergency calls and help improve the department’s overall service levels and response times.

When proposing the hiring of the three additional customer service officers, Marysville Police Chief Erik Scairpon said he hopes this role would serve as a potential recruitment pipeline for future police officers.

The department had previously hired one customer service officer, who currently works primarily on animal control cases.

Each customer service officer would receive five weeks of on-the-job training and would cost about $130K annually, according to a proposal submitted to the council.

Scairpon plans to fill these new positions by the end of the year.
