BIRCH BAY, Wash. — Inmate work crews helped to clean up messes left behind after July Fourth celebrations in Birch Bay.
People who are properly classified and do not represent a security risk helped to serve in the work crews, according to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.

“Most take pride in the work they do in paying back the community,” a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office wrote on Facebook.
The Sheriff’s Office said those who serve in the out-of-custody and in-custody work crews receive one day of credit that otherwise would be spent in jail.
Officials said the programs also help to preserve space in jails for violent and dangerous inmates who present risks.
