Amazon says it will now let people in the greater Seattle area use “food stamps,” or SNAP benefits, to shop for groceries online.
The company expanded a pilot program that was at first only available in New York.
Amazon says people who use SNAP, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs, don’t need a Prime membership to buy groceries on Amazon.com with their EBT cards starting Wednesday.
The company said the rest of the people across Washington state who get SNAP benefits should be able to buy groceries on Amazon within the next month.
They will be able to buy from Amazon’s main grocery selection as well as from Prime Pantry and Amazon Fresh.
Amazon said it believes the program will help people who don’t have easy access to grocery stores to get what they need as the pilot program expands to other areas.
