Fire destroyed a two-story garage Monday evening in a remote part of Jefferson County.

At least nine fire engines and four water tenders were sent to the 14900 block of Coyle Road in Quilcene, about an hour south of Port Townsend. The blaze and response caused smoke and water damage to the adjoining house, and part of an acre of a nearby wildland also was burned.

Firefighters from East Jefferson Fire Rescue, Kitsap County, Quilcene Fire and nearby Navy resources responded to put out the fire, which started about 5:45 p.m.

There were no injuries.  The property is a vacation home and the owners were not present at the time.  A neighbor called in the fire when they heard an explosion

Firefighters said it took them about 25 minutes just to get on the scene because of the remote location.  When they arrived they found the garage and propane tanks burning.  They focused their efforts and limited water on the breezeway between the garage and home, which likely saved much of the house.

It was not clear what caused the fire and responders did not immediately have a damage estimate.
