Coast Guard bomb detection K-9 ‘Crema' being honored in memorial

United States Coast Guard Senior Chief K9 Crema

SEATTLE — The Coast Guard is holding a memorial Thursday for Crema, a yellow Labrador explosives detection K-9.

The K-9 worked with the Maritime Safety and Security Team in Seattle under his handler, Chief Petty Officer William Porter.

USCG Senior Chief K-9 Crema and Porter successfully conducted hundreds of operational missions across the country.

Other K-9 units and representatives from local agencies will attend the memorial on base at Pier 36, followed by a procession as Porter carries his ashes.

He served in the Coast Guard for six years and started his career in Galveston, Texas.

Porter will receive formal permission from the unit's commanding officer before getting underway in a small boat to spread Crema's ashes.
